Stir it Up

Over the last three years, I have become somewhat of a destination wedding specialist. In November, I had the privilege of joining Angie and Shawn in Jamaica to capture their nuptials. Angie’s sweet disposition is a perfect complement to Shawn’s hilarious sense of humour and infectious laugh.

Having never traveled to Jamaica, I was excited to check off my 45th country and to experience a part of musical culture that I love. Everywhere you went you could hear Bob Marley, Peter Tosh or one of the many other famous Jamaican Reggae artists. Shawn’s family is of Jamaican descent, so I could tell that having their wedding here was special for his side of the family.

The Gran Bahia Principe in Runaway Bay was the setting for a week of fun in the sun and a beachside ceremony. My time with Angie and Shawn started as all of my destination weddings do, with an early morning engagement session. I like to start right at dawn so my joke with my clients is that they will hate my guts on that morning, but they will love me when they see the images! The first selection of images below shows some of the results form that perfect Caribbean morning.

We had a few days until their big day so I scouted the resort for nice spots to put the couple for their photos. In doing this, I discovered the beach bar and “Jerk Center”. They served Jerk Chicken and Pork to massive lines of resort guests. This was definitely the best food on the resort. As we enjoyed the very traditional meal, we were all serenaded by the steel drum band that played almost every day.

On the morning of the wedding, I started by capturing Angie and her girls in the resort spa getting pampered. It was a fantastic day with gorgeous cloud formations and a comfortable island breeze. The gazebo on the water was a perfect frame for a romantic outdoor ceremony. When the ceremony finished, it was about 45 minutes before sunset so I worked quickly to get some formal family shots. I then worked with the bridal party to get some amazing shots with an unbelievable backdrop of clouds that looked like they have been photoshopped into the images! Have a look below and you will see what I mean!

As in all of my destination wedding packages, I include a post shoot. Again, I like to start at dawn, but this time I wanted the entire bridal party there as we didn’t have that much time before we lost the sun after the ceremony. I now had the entire bridal party mad at me for waking them up at 5:00am on their vacation! The light that morning was perfect, starting off warm and ambient and then as the sun got a little higher, the shadows got longer and created some really dramatic effects.

I captured everyone looking fresh and crisp before we trashed the dress! I set up a shot where everyone jumped into the pool at the same time. I however did not start the water fight that ensued.

Below are a selection of images from the week I spent with Angie and Shawn.

I hope they are not mad at me any longer as they can finally see the results of my annoying early morning wake up calls… Congratulations guys!
