Let’s be honest, I am a very cautious person, especially when I travel. I watch what I eat, what I drink, what I brush my teeth with and I even make sure to keep my lips tightly sealed in the shower. When you are travelling in Africa for two months, it’s only a matter of time before you get those “issues”. Unfortunately for me, it was not just the Montezuma’s revenge. It was accompanied by chills and a body ache that would stop an elephant in its tracks. As many of you know, I have been training for the Kilimanjaro Climb for months. Going to the gym seven days a week, climbing the step mill for two to three hours with 50 pounds strapped to my back. Whatever bug I caught was so bad, I was willing to throw all that training and preparation out the window and get on the first flight home. As I was suffering in agony from the cramps that were folding me in half for two straight days, my iPod randomly played a song that turned everything around. I don’t know why, but after the first verse I was ready to climb Mount Everest let alone Kilimanjaro. It was actually the first six words! The song has been a favourite of mine for years and always gives me a bit of a boost. I am sure a lot of you will agree that “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” by U2 has that effect on you as well. Out of all of the great beasts of Africa, it was a microscopic organism that brought me to my knees. I have learned that what does not kill you will make you climb a mountain.
