My morning today started with a nice breakfast at my posh resort and then a 30 minute drive through many local villages to the port. I knew the luxury was about to end as I boarded the catamaran for a five hour trip to the north western Yasewa Island group. A funny thing about the catamaran ride was one of the songs that played on the way. The song was “I’m sitting on the Top of Kilimanjaro”, a song that I heard constantly on my African safari last year. I was heading to the northern most island of Nacula where there is no hot water or electricity. I am staying in a “Bure” which is a traditional beach hut. This is as about as rustic as it gets. I actually had flashbacks of being in Africa last year. After a lunch served by the local villagers, I did not even take my camera out because it was so hot. I dropped my gear off in my Bure and ran straight for the ocean. The water was warm but extremely refreshing. After relaxing at the beach, napping in a hammock, and being generally lazy, I figured I better get to work. I grabbed my gear and walked the beach and then up the hill at the south end of the island. It was a warm up for the major trek ahead of me in a few days where I will be hiking up the mountain on Waya Lailai Island. If you have seen the movie Castaway, it is very similar to the mountain Tom Hanks climbs. The 360 degree views were spectacular, even from this relatively low hill. The temperature and humidity did not drop that much in the evening but the sound of the lapping waves on the beach right outside my Bure is amazing to listen to as I write this post. I will shut up now and let my pictures do the rest of the talking!
