In the first two days here, I put over 850km on my rental car. Most of which was yesterday in my long trek from Tel Aviv to Eilat. The progression of scenery changed so many times, it seemed like I was traveling thousands of kilometres and not mere hundreds. As I left Tel Aviv and drove south, the flat surfing beach and line of hotels slowly turned to windy mountain road and then to a barren desert. The colour of the desert and mountains surrounding me changed from white, to peach to red and even in some spots they were burgundy to black. Driving was nerve racking at times as the roads winded up and down escarpments in a zigzag. The roads I took brought me by heavily fortified military positions and for obvious reasons there are no images to display of this. At the checkpoints I passed through, the soldiers seemed a little on edge and I didn’t want to ask permission to take their photograph. When I arrived in Eilat, the road took me down a route carved into the side of a mountain. It was like arriving in an oasis as the dry desert turned into a lush, thriving city on the shore of the Red Sea. There were a line of resorts lining the entire north end of the sea which came to a point between the mountains. It is a beautiful location. Being a Jewish holiday, I was hard pressed to find a room and almost ended up sleeping in my car like plenty of other people I saw lining the beach parking lots. At the last minute, I found a guest house and was able to secure a nice room to edit my photos and write to you all. More images are coming, I just don’t want to get backlogged as I am anticipating a huge shutter count over the next few days. Stay tuned, the Dead Sea is next!
